Motorcycle Safety Tip: Don’t Wear Flip Flops

It is debatable if motorcycle accidents are more dangerous than car accidents. However, it is very true that motorcycle riders start out with some disadvantages to their safety:
- They have 2 wheels instead of 4, so it is crucial that they pay more attention to their balance and driving abilities.
- Given their smaller size, they are more difficult to see than cars and are thus more likely to be hit by other road users.
- A motorcyclist is not protected by a steel cage like a car driver is. In the event of a collision, his body will be the only bodywork.
It is a common thing to say that motorcycles are more dangerous than cars. According to a study released by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) on motorcycles and ATVs (All-terrain vehicles), “Motorcycle deaths accounted for 13 percent of all motor vehicle crash deaths in 2013 and were more than double the number of motorcyclist deaths in 1997.” According to this study, a total of 4,381 motorcyclists died in crashes in 2013. Moreover, out of the 4,381 deaths, “58 % occurred in multiple-vehicle crashes.” Most of the time, we tend to think that bigger is better. A car is safer than a motorcycle. An SUV is safer than a small car. A pick-up truck? Safer than ever. But, if we all drove around in main battle tanks, would the roads be safer?
Wrap It Up For Motorcycle Safety!
Your whole body it is. In fact, emphasis is often put on wearing proper riding gear every time (especially helmets) because it will improve the chances of surviving an accident. However, why would anyone think that because their head is protected, they are good to go?
Florida inhabitants enjoy warm temperature all year long and it is very common to witness motorcyclists who are not properly equipped for riding safely. T-shirts, shorts, bare hands, sandals… One may not realize how bad of a wardrobe decision it was until it is too late to choose safety over comfort and style.
Out of all the elements a rider can use to protect himself/herself, 5 essential pieces of gear should be priorities:
- Riding gloves
- Motorcycle jacket
- Over the ankle motorcycle boots
- Motorcycle pants
Putting all the controversies and personal convictions about safety on the road, laws about helmets and the battle between car drivers and riders, just imagine your bare body being thrown on the asphalt at a great velocity: anyone would immediately see why investing money in what protects you from the ground is so important, whether it is the law or not.
